First English Description (from Dillwyn, 1817, p. 585-586):

"Shell about an inch and three quarters long, and an inch broad, of a brownish or reddish colour, umbilicated, with a wide aperture, and the outer lip plaited and toothed within; spire produced, and composed of six rather inflated whirls. Having been unable to ascertain this species, I have left it in the place which Gmelin has assigned to it, but it ought probably to be removed to the Murices, as some references which belong to M. clandestinus have been confounded with it. Schreibers has removed it to the third division of Buccinum, and in his Conchylien it stands next to B. Glans."
